Lihue is Kauaʻi's county seat and the commercial center of the island — it has the airport, the government buildings, the hospital, and the strip malls where locals shop and eat. It is not a scenic town, and visitors often drive through it on their way to Poipu or the North Shore without stopping. The ones who stop eat better.
Hamura Saimin — The Anchor
Hamura Saimin is the most important restaurant in Lihue and one of the most important in the state. A counter-only diner open since 1952, with fresh saimin made in-house and lilikoi (passion fruit) chiffon pie that has been ordered by nearly everyone who has ever sat at the counter. The saimin broth is clean and deeply savory; the noodles are fresh. Go for the saimin, stay for the pie.
Oki Diner — The Full Plate
Oki Diner in Lihue serves breakfast and lunch in the plate lunch format — teriyaki, katsu, local specials. It is the working person's diner: fast, honest, under $12. The breakfast plate with Portuguese sausage and rice is the morning call.
Tip Top Motel, Cafe & Bakery
The Tip Top Cafe in Lihue has been feeding locals since 1916. The macadamia nut pancakes are the most famous item; the full breakfast plate is more filling. It operates on motel-breakfast hours (early) and closes by early afternoon. The attached bakery sells cookies and pastries that are worth taking on a drive.
The Kukui Grove Center Lunch Wagons
The Kukui Grove shopping center in Lihue has lunch wagon operators that park in the lot on weekdays — these are the most honest price-per-plate options in Lihue. No signage, cash only, the same menu that's been on their chalkboard for a decade. Find them by looking for the line of hospital workers at noon.
